How to run effective A/B tests that move key metrics.

A/B testing is the most reliable way to learn what actually moves your game's core metrics. Rather than guessing, you can experiment with controlled variants and measure the impact on retention, engagement, and monetization.
Start with a clear hypothesis. Define the metric you expect to change, for example day 1 retention, tutorial completion, or first purchase rate. A focused hypothesis keeps tests small and interpretable.

What to test first
- Onboarding flows and tutorial prompts
- First-time user experience and pacing
- Reward timing and economy tweaks
- Microcopy and call to action wording
- Monetization placements and price offers
Be mindful of sample size and statistical power. Small changes require large samples to detect reliably. Use sequential testing methods or bayesian approaches if you need faster decisions, but always control for false positives.
Rollout and guardrails
Run tests on a subset of users with feature flagging. Monitor core metrics and secondary metrics to detect negative impacts. If a variant wins, ramp it gradually and keep observing for downstream effects.
Measuring success
- Primary KPI: retention or conversion metric you aim to improve
- Secondary KPIs: session length, ARPU, funnel completion
- Statistical significance and confidence intervals
- Duration: run tests long enough to cover cohort behavior
A/B testing is not a replacement for product thinking. Use it to validate ideas quickly, then iterate on the winners. Over time a disciplined testing culture compounds into large gains in retention and lifetime value.
